See Office365/SharePoint Online in action in a newly launched site
DEG recently worked with Ferrellgas, a propane company based in the KC area, to design and install the latest version of SharePoint online (cloud-based) as the new company intranet. Because Ferrellgas has offices across the country, it is critical for Ferrellgas' corporate support to be able to communicate with its service centers in the field in a more direct, consistent and dynamic manner that allows for social, two-way feedback.

See new SharePoint online features such as Delve profiles, which let employees upload their own images and skills, making it easier for coworkers to become familiar with one another and find each other based on what they do versus knowing a person's name.

Marjie Goodman is a digital content and collaboration strategist for DEG. Previously, she spent about a decade managing enterprisewide, internal communications channels for a Fortune #150 company during several mergers, including steering the corporate intranet and designing a social news channel while creating a content strategy to engage 50,000 employees on a daily basis. She now acts as the community manager for the Ferrellgas intranet.

Drew Flowerday is a coordinator for the Enterprise Collaboration practice at DEG. He played a primary role in the design and implementation of the Ferrellgas intranet on SharePoint Online, and now acts as the site's technical support resource.

  • Meeting Room C: Downstairs and to the right
  • This month, John Kary will present Rethinking Loops:
You likely learned about loop constructs very early in your programming career and use them every day--so often you don't think twice! The problem is for() and foreach() are so fundamental developers use them for everything! Even worse almost every developer will use them differently to accomplish the same goal. So what would intention-revealing PHP code look like without using for() and foreach()? Let's explore some functional programming concepts and find out!
Knowing basic functional programming concepts will improve your PHP code. Your new mindset will favor writing code with better separation of concerns and decreased complexity: clean code. We will explore some poor examples of using loops to process data, then ease into learning functional concepts like map, reduce, filter and collection pipelining. We'll then use our newfound knowledge to refactor a large foreach() loop to use the new techniques. Lastly we'll explore some existing libraries and even experimental PHP RFC features to make our code even more concise. Beware: after this talk you'll never look at for() and foreach() loops the same again!
    ...
We'll also have time for you to share something. Many attendees often bring their laptops and share things they're working on, things they've learned, and things they need help with. Slides are optional, but we like to see code if you have it!
If you'd like to be listed on the agenda, please let Aaron or Eric know, or comment on this event. Otherwise, we'll have time for lightning talks.

  • Open to anyone in the area who is interested in developing video games. In order to have a little structure, we'll try to do a couple things each week:
Introduce new members. What have you worked on, game related or not? What do you want to work on next?
Discuss this week's conversation starter. Some article, video or game that we can dig into a little.
Members can present any games they're working on, for feedback or just to brag.
Of course, it's all very informal. The main goal is interesting conversation(s) about our passion.
    Looking forward to it!

  • Hammerspace

    440 E 63rd St , Kansas City, MO (map)

  • This is a meet-up night for HammerSpace members that focuses on programming, soldering, Arduino or Raspberry Pi builds, Linux projects, robotics, 3D printers, and anything else tech related. Bring in your project to work on or just to show off to other tech-minded members.
We do not have any group learning activities planned at the moment, but we might have some for future Tech Tuesday nights after we figure out what people are interested in doing. These meet-ups are free for members of Hammerspace unless we have an organized group activity you want to participate in (such as soldering a provided electronics kit, etc)
We hope these meet-up nights bring our more tech-minded members together to network, socialize, and collaborate with each other, much like our art-minded members do during our Art Jam nights.

KC SQL Server User Group - Building your ETL Framework with BIML

    Tuesday, February 23, 2016 from 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM

The meeting tomorrow has been rescheduled for next Tuesday (2/23) at 2:30pm, and will be held at the Centriq building off of Stateline Road.

Meagan Longoria will be presenting: Building your ETL Framework with BIML

Topic: BIML makes SSIS development faster and creates reusable modules that help you apply a consistent ETL framework across solutions. In this session, we will write BIML and use it to build an SSIS package. You'll see how BIML allows you to avoid corrupted metadata and the tedious repetition of implementing simple SSIS patterns, freeing you up to take on new and interesting ETL challenges. Then we will review how to use it to create an extensible ETL framework.

We will also be holding elections at this meeting, if you would like a more involved in the user group and would like to help shape how it goes forward, this is a great opportunity to get involved!   If you'd like to run, please let me know, we still have a couple of spots no one has volunteered to fill.  I look forward to seeing everyone there!
