  • This is a chance for you to show off what you know about some of the more advanced and specialized features of R. Although these topics may not be immediately accessible to everyone, they will help you understand some of the potential that R can provide.

Everyone, beginner or advanced, is welcome. Don't be scared by the "advanced topics". It's your chance to see some of the capabilities that make R so useful, and even if you won't necessarily be able to use these features right away, you will still learn about future directions that you can take as you become more proficient in R programming.

We need a couple of volunteers. Steve Simon will talk about survival analysis. We've had a few suggestions for advanced topics: text mining and data visualization. One of our members mentioned at an earlier meeting that he might talk about tweet mining, but I have not had time to follow up with him about this.

We had a suggestion that, if possible, the speakers could post their materials (especially their data sources) a week or so before the meeting so that anyone attending could take a peek and maybe even try a few simple things themselves. This is not always possible, of course, but when it can be done, it is an excellent suggestion.

  • Come work on Python projects, get programming help, help others, and hang out. Bring your own project or work on one of the suggested projects below. We'll have members available to help beginning Python programmers with language basics and practice.
Audience: Everyone! We'll have something for all Python experience levels.
Things to bring: a wireless-enabled laptop and power cord
Sessions On Demand (SOD): These demand-based sessions will have facilitators available.
Beginners Boostrap: Just getting started with Python? We'll help you get everything you need to learn Python installed on your computer. Here are some good resources for learning Python:
    The official Python tutorial:  http://docs.python.org/tutorial/
Think Python: How to Think Like a Computer Scientist: http://www.greenteapress.com/thinkpython/
An introduction to Python through writing games: http://inventwithpython.com/chapters/
Learn Python the Hard Way: http://learnpythonthehardway.org
    Python coding exercises: http://codingbat.com/python
Django Jam: A session for discussing all things Django.
Tools & Tips: A session about the practical aspects of Python programming. Editor or IDE? MySQL, PostgreSQL or NoSQL? virtualenv or virtual machine?
Build Your Own Session (BYOS): Don't like any of these sessions? How about facilitating one of your own? It's always nice to hear new voices and viewpoints.
Programming Practice: We'll have a problem for programming practice.

  • We are across the street from Home Depot (on west side of Metcalf)
  • Wow! We have a great lineup for our next meetup! Very exciting!
Jim Bates, Senior Systems Engineer from MapR will talk to us about Apache Drill and it's capabilities including a demo!
Piero Ferrante from Sprint Pingsight Media+ leads the Kansas City Data Science meetup and will talk to us about how they leverage Hadoop and Hive at Pinsight Media+

    Jim's talk abstract:
In today's world, you need to be able to keep up with complex, rapidly evolving data, without having to wait for traditional RDBMS data management processes before you can start exploring new data and developing new insights. You also need to be able to use familiar tools to develop those insights, including the SQL query language and the tremendous toolsets built on top of it.
Apache Drill enables analysts and data scientists to perform fast SQL queries on Big Data, drawing both on traditional DBA-managed tables, as well as data in files and NoSQL databases whose structures may be complex and rapidly evolving.
In this presentation we'll describe how Drill meets this challenge, we'll demonstrate Drill in action on a live Hadoop cluster, and we'll show how you can easily get started using Drill even on a single machine without Hadoop.
Piero's focus: 1) Overview of Hadoop' at Pinsight Media+
2)The types of data sources are and how they are ingested into Hadoop
    3)  The different Hive queries run and lessons learnt around when to use Hive and when not to

  • Open to anyone in the area who is interested in developing video games. In order to have a little structure, we'll try to do a couple things each week:
    • Introduce new members. What have you worked on, game related or not? What do you want to work on next?
    • Discuss this week's conversation starter. Some article, video or game that we can dig into a little.
    • Members can present any games they're working on, for feedback or just to brag.
Of course, it's all very informal. The main goal is interesting conversation(s) about our passion.
    Looking forward to it!
